Soil Requirements
We are often asked what our requirements are for the soil to be used with our ESS-13 lining systems. Most any soil can benefit from the addition of ESS-13. It improves the performance of whatever soil it is being used with. That being said, there are some recommendations.
In order to achieve a performance standard of 1x10-6 to 1x10-7 cps, the soil should meet the following requirements:
- >50% passing a 200 sieve, (preferably 60 to 80%)
- Plasticity Index above 10 (preferably 15 or higher)
- Soil Classification – CL (or possibly SM, SC or ML)
The best way to determine if the soil is suitable is to send us a sample for analysis. We can do our own in-house analysis to determine the approximate results that can be achieved. For projects with a performance standard, a permeability test can be done with the ESS-13 included to determine the actual results achievable (although we frequently exceed these test results). This test is done by an independent geotechnical testing lab. For more information on this process, please contact your sales representative.
